RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The season is far enough along to just accept this is the way it’s going to be for the Seattle Seahawks. They are the sort of team that will elicit boos walking off the field at halftime and leave those same fans cheering as they leave the field two quarters later.Sometimes the offense is going to be unsightly and looking lost. Sometimes the defense is going to be unable to make stops. But for all their faults, the Seahawks are 6-3 and tied for the NFC West lead. And they’re about to embark on a five-week stretch that’ll test just how well they can mask their shortcomings.“We just got to be better. We won at the end of the day, but we got to be better still,” defensive end Dre’Mont Jones said after Sunday’s 29-26 win over Washington. “It’s a lot to clean up and improve on from top to bottom, inside and out, we got to fix that.”Seattle rebounded from the second-worst loss of Pete Carroll’s tenure, but it wasn’t a straightforward victory over the Commanders. HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Raiders had just 33 yards rushing at halftime of Sunday night’s game against the Jets, averaging 2.8 yards per carry. Many coaches would’ve been tempted to try to win the game through the air in the second half, but not Las Vegas’ Antonio Pierce. He doubled down on the running game in the second half, and it’s a major reason the Raiders rallied to beat New York 16-12.Led by Josh Jacobs, the Raiders rushed for 115 yards in the second half, averaging 5.8 yards a pop. Jacobs went from gaining 30 yards on 10 carries in the opening 30 minutes to picking up 86 yards on 17 attempts after halftime. This isn’t a one-off, either. In the Raiders’ two games since Pierce became the interim coach, he has emphasized the ground game. Jacobs rushed for 98 yards the week before against the New York Giants, giving him, 214 yards in two games with Pierce in control. He averaged 4 yards on 53 combined carries.Jacobs gained 408 yards in his firs...

Jayson Tatum takes over, defense steps up as Celtics pull away from Knicks

When he gets going, it’s almost unstoppable to stop Jayson Tatum. The Knicks learned that again on Monday night at TD Garden.Tatum scored 35 points, including 23 in the second half and 17 in the fourth quarter, as the Celtics superstar continued his MVP-caliber start to the season. He was the difference as the Celtics, in a dog fight with the Knicks for most of the night, pulled away for a 114-98 victory.Jaylen Brown added 22 points and Kristaps Porzingis had 21 for the Celtics, who won their third game in a row. The C’s, like in the season opener at Madison Square Garden, struggled to find separation against Jalen Brunson and the tough Knicks, but they relied on one of their better defensive efforts of the season to turn the game around. The Celtics and Knicks traded haymakers for most of the first three quarters, neither budging before the C’s finally got some breathing room. The game was tied at 72 with 3:05 to go before the Celtics went on a 12-4 run to close the quarter, which in...

SAN DIEGO -- Makers Church, located in a century-old church location in North Park, has big plans for the future after selling a 35,000-square foot parcel of land across from the church at Bancroft Street and North Park Way. The six homes left abandoned on the land are scheduled for demolition this week. “They've just been deteriorating and dilapidated over the past several years,” said Brittany Delacruz, who has lived In North Park for more than 10 years.  Delacruz thinks anything is better than what she describes as the existing eyesore, but another group of residents hoped to stop the sale and planned development. They created a website, “STOP THE MAKERS CHURCH,” and say the church is using its religious nonprofit exempt status to be allowed to demo the homes that the groups says are historically designated, but that, says Delacruz, is not true.  “A lot of these houses have been renovated so much that they probably did not have historical designation in the first place," Delacruz...
