Alabama’s Milroe, Georgia’s Beck and Oregon’s Gabriel will head into 2024 with Heisman Trophy hype

NEW YORK (AP) — The day before Jayden Daniels won the Heisman Trophy he was asked if he would return to LSU for another season next year.“I can’t,” he said.Oh, right. The careers of college quarterbacks might feel endless these days, but even with the bonus COVID year the NCAA handed out for those in college in 2020, Daniels is done after playing five seasons.Fellow Heisman finalist Bo Nix of Oregon is also finished after five years. Injuries allowed Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. to play six years. He, too, will be getting a job next year — most likely in the NFL.Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. was the only Heisman finalist with eligibility remaining. He has said he hasn’t decided on a return, but as a likely top five draft pick there probably aren’t enough NIL dollars to lure him back to Columbus for another season. With 2022 Heisman winner Caleb Williams off to the NFL, too, the 2024 Heisman race looks wide open.INCUMBENT QBsAlabama’s Jalen Mil...

The Dodgers gave Shohei Ohtani $700 million to hit and pitch — but also because he can sell

PHOENIX (AP) — Shohei Ohtani’s jaw-dropping $700 million, 10-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers has some similarities to other contracts for the world’s biggest sports stars, including soccer icons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, along with NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes. In terms of his marketability, experts point to another name. The real comparison? Try Taylor Swift. The global music sensation’s broad appeal — one that bridges the gap between generations and expands to other countries — is an extremely rare phenomenon that Ohtani shares. There’s no doubt the Dodgers hope they can leverage the Japanese star’ s arrival into even more money for a franchise that is already one of the most popular in Major League Baseball.“He’s rocketed into a stratosphere all his own,” sports agent Leigh Steinberg said.Ohtani was expected to sign the biggest deal in MLB history as a free agent this offseason and didn’t disappoint. As the war between Israel and Hamas passes the two-month mark, it’s still unclear how the fighting will end and how long it will last, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Sunday.“We have these discussions with Israel including about the duration as well as how it is prosecuting this campaign against Hamas. These are decisions for Israel to make,” Blinken said Sunday during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.”“But Hamas has decisions to make, too. It could get out from hiding behind civilians tomorrow. It could put down its arms tomorrow. It could surrender tomorrow and this would be over,” he added. The fighting, which began after Hamas attacked and killed about 1,200 people in Israel on Oct. 7, has devastated Gaza. In response to the attack, Israel launched an air and ground war that has killed thousands of Palestinians, mostly civilians, and forced some 1.9 million people to flee their homes, according to the Associated Press. University of Pennsylvania’s president has resigned after coming under fire for her response to antisemitism on campus, as the U.S. homes in on higher education’s response to the ongoing war between Hamas and Israel. Elizabeth Magill stepped down on Saturday, days after she appeared before the U.S. Congress alongside other university leaders. Magill, along with Harvard President Claudine Gay and Massachusetts Institute of Technology President Sally Kornbluth, participated in a contentious, five-hour grilling from lawmakers on Tuesday over their response to antisemitism on their campuses. They faced an intense backlash for evading a question about pro-Palestinian student protesters’ calls for “intifada” or “the genocide of Jews.”Magill, whose position was already under pressure following her rejection of calls to cancel a planned Palestinian literary conference, on Wednesday released a video statement apologizing for her testimony.
